10 Laundry Tips to Extend the Life of Your Wardrobe

Laundry is one of those chores that can be a pain, but when done right, it can significantly increase the life of your wardrobe. Whether you’re caring for your favorite consignment finds or your go-to basics, these tips will help you maintain your clothes in great condition!

1. Use the Right Detergent, and the Right Amount

Finding the best detergent for your washing machine, water hardness, and budget requires research, trial, and error. Contrary to popular belief, more detergent doesn’t mean cleaner clothes. Using too much can lead to excess chemicals in the water waste, residue build-up in your machine, and deposits on fabrics. Always use the recommended amount of detergent or even less for high-efficiency (HE) machines to avoid these issues and keep your clothes looking fresh.

2. Spot Clean Properly

You would be shocked at how many stains can be removed by spot treating them before washing. My go-to hack is to apply Dawn dish soap directly to the stain. Rub the fabric together until it lightly foams to get the soap deep into the fibres before washing in cold water. Never use hot water on a stain, as it can set the stain permanently. If this method doesn't work, apply hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to the stain and let it sit for an hour before washing again. This hack has saved many of my tops from common stains like coffee, wine, or tomato sauce.

3. Avoid Nonessentials

Fabric softeners and bleach can break down fabrics faster. If you must use a fabric softener, opt for natural wool blend laundry balls. They avoid adding chemicals to your fabrics and naturally soften your clothes, extending their lifespan without the harsh effects of chemical softeners.

4. Rethink Dry Cleaning

Many items labelled “dry clean only” can be safely hand washed or machine washed on a delicate cycle. I often place delicate dry clean items in a garment bag, wash them on the gentle cycle, and hang them to dry. Reserve dry cleaning for more complex items like wool coats with lining. This approach saves money and reduces exposure to the harsh chemicals used in dry cleaning.

5. Limit Dryer Use

Avoid using the dryer for items you care about. Towels and bedding can go in the dryer, but to prevent pilling and fabric breakdown, hang dry most clothes. If you must use the dryer, opt for low-heat cycles and always double-check the tags on your garments before drying to avoid shrinking your favourite sweater! Fabrics like acrylic are notorious for pilling, so be mindful of fabric choices when considering their long-term upkeep.

6. Wash Less Frequently

Unless your clothes are visibly dirty or have a strong odour, consider wearing them several times before washing. I sometimes throw a scented fabric bag in with my clothes to keep them smelling fresh!

7. Protect Delicates with Mesh Bags

Use mesh laundry bags to protect delicate items from snagging or catching on other clothes during the wash cycle. I prefer bags without small holes for washing bras to avoid clasps catching on other clothes. Additionally, place silk blouses, garments with zippers, cashmere, and other easily damaged items in garment bags to protect them from wear and tear during washing.

8. Fasten Before Washing

Always zip, button, and tie garments before washing to prevent damage. This simple step can prevent a lot of pilling on your garments. A handy trick to get rid of pilling fast is to use an old razor to shave off extra fluff. It takes a few minutes and leaves your sweater looking brand new again!

9. Handle Denim with Care

For new jeans, turn them inside out, wash in warm water, and dry them once before wearing. For subsequent washes, turn jeans inside out, wash in cold water, and hang dry to maintain their shape and colour. This helps prevent fading and keeps your jeans looking new.

10. Lower Wash and Dry Temperatures

Washing and drying at lower temperatures can prevent stretching, shrinking, and fabric damage. Most clothes should be washed on cold or room temperature settings. Lower temperatures are gentler on fabrics and help extend the life of your garments.

Caring for your clothes properly can transform your laundry routine from a mundane chore into a rewarding habit that protects your investment in your wardrobe. Whether you’re buying smart at a consignment shop or maintaining your favourite pieces, these simple yet effective tips will preserve the quality and longevity of your clothes.

Remember, a little extra care goes a long way. Buy smart, wash smart, and you’ll keep your favorite outfits looking fabulous for years to come!
